R.E.M., Britney & More

Unless you live under a boulder, I’m sure it comes as old news to you that R.E.M. broke up this week after more than three decades together!

And, as R.E.M. has always done, they handled this move with class.

Here’s what lead singer Michael Stipe said.

“A wise man once said that the skill in attending a party is knowing when it’s time to leave. We did something extraordinary together. We did this thing. And now we’re going to walk away from it.”

In my opinion, its neat to see a band end on their own terms and end with a sense of gratitude for not only the fans, but for the music, as well. What I mean by that is, when you walk away with your head on straight and decide its time to “hang ’em up” for the right reasons, that’s pretty special. Kudos to R.E.M., whose legacy will only grow with time.

And while we’re handing out kudos to R.E.M., let’s also do so for Michael Jackson’s son, Prince Michael Jackson.

With much eloquence, the 14 year old was in Berlin this weekend supporting numerous charities for kids. He spoke in front of an audience of around 1,000 and said, “With everything I do, I try to build on what my father did. I also try to help and change things – just like he did.”

It’ll be interesting to see how MJ’s kids grow and mature, but this is obviously a great start!

Our last stop this week is news on Britney Spears, who is about to turn 30 in December!

I turned 30 this past December and as many of you did, freaked out. However, Britney is taking it all in stride and says, “I think things only get better. I have nothing left to prove at this point. I just try and have fun with music and evolve.”

Here’s to life getting better each year after 30, both for Britney, you and I!

Until next week, “keep livin’ the 90’s dream!”
